Pokémon Card Values: What to Look For Before You Sell

Got a binder full of Pokémon cards? Some could be worth thousands. Here’s how to figure out what you have before you sell — and how we help collectors in Meridian get the best value.

The Cards That Are Actually Worth Something

Not every Pokémon card is valuable, but the ones that are can be worth serious money. The most valuable cards include: 1st Edition Base Set holos (Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur), shadowless Base Set cards, Gold Star cards from EX sets, Illustrator cards, and modern Alt Art and Secret Rare cards from recent sets like Crown Zenith and Scarlet & Violet.

How to Check if a Card Is 1st Edition

Look for the “1st Edition” stamp on the left side of the card, below the art box. On Base Set cards, also look for the lack of a shadow under Pokémon in the artwork — these “shadowless” cards are from the very first print run and are extremely desirable.

Condition Is Everything

Even valuable cards lose most of their worth if they’re heavily played, scratched, or bent. A PSA 10 1st Edition Charizard is worth dramatically more than a PSA 6. If you have cards you think might be in great condition, it’s worth getting them graded before selling. We handle BGS and CGC submissions for Pokémon at 208 Card Vault.
